Triple M's Emily Jade O'Keefe. What a woman!
Emily Jade, Emily Jade. Emily Everywhere! Where do I start? I met EJ for the first time earlier this year when she agreed to be my Model for the YWCA’s “Love Your Body” event. I don’t get to listen to morning radio much – it’s no secret – I’m a Sunrise/Morning Show fan so unless I’m in the car at some ungodly early hour of the morning Radio doesn’t get much of a look-in. But I do know that if I WAS out of bed/in the car I’d be tuning in to “The Cage” to get my daily dose of Emily Jade! Instead, I subscribe to her “Emily Everywhere” Blog to read her thoughts on everything from IVF to husbands who fart in bed, to volunteering for the YWCA’s Love Your Body event!

We all have our own style whether we may know it or not. We all choose certain styles of clothing, favour certain colours, communicate in a certain way, and have our own style of coping with pretty much all of what life dishes out. But last night’s sleep got me to thinking about our Bedroom Styles – so much so, this morning I felt sure I would awaken to a husband who would resemble a piece of Swiss Cheese instead of a man. Why? Because of the number of times I poked and prodded him to get him to stop moaning, groaning or semi-snoring.
I eventually gave in to my previously tried & true, gentle, subtle but very effective style of coercion…a feather-light touch on the tip of the nose (which makes him think there’s a bug crawling on him!). I vary things a little – last night I discovered a toe-tickle on the back of the butt will also make him jump – quite high in fact! Oh well…I figure a woman’s gotta do what a woman’s gotta do! And desperate, sleep-deprived times call for desperate measures and creative thinking. Here’s a brief rundown of our individual bedroom styles – what are yours? And if you have any other tips on how I can get him to come around to MY style of sleeping, feel free to share them with me!

In loving memory. Kon Dimakis 15 Aug 1928 - 26 Aug 2009
1928 – 15th Aug - Dad arrived on this earth.
1954 - Dad left Greece and settled in Australia.
2009 – 15th Aug – Dad turned 81. This was also the last day I heard his voice as I played a Youtube clip of Zorba the Greek on my iPhone, holding it up close to make sure he could hear it. His words “Oh, you’re lovely” will live in my heart forever
2009 – 26th Aug – Dad left this earth as quietly and dignified as he lived his life.
2010 onwards - I will ALWAYS miss him…
A man of great style – emotional, affectionate, intelligent, loving and the most generous soul I’ve ever known. He was a true “gentle”man and the reason for any of the good in the person I am today.
Writing about my Dad as I approach the 1st anniversary of his death may well be painful as all hell for me, but it’s something I must do for me. I must acknowledge that the pain is not just going to go away even if I do manage to stay busy and distracted. I’m a talker. I need to get things out. It’s how I’ve “dealt” all of my life. I need to give a voice to the pain of my loss and pay a small tribute to the wonderful man who continues to guide me from heaven, what/where ever that may be. I’m not a big sports fan at all. And up until Sunday the name Brad Thorn was not even on my radar. In fact I don’t even really know why I started to read the story in The Courier Mail’s Q-Weekend but I’m very glad I did! For me to find myself crying into my coffee is not uncommon (I think perhaps I have a bladder where my sinuses should be!) but for me to read the back pages of the paper sure is rare! To find myself so moved by his story got me thinking about a few things. Role Models. Celebrity Scandal. Media. And why people like me can do without my regular dose of sport…
You know why people like me don’t really get into watching sport on TV?
Because I don’t know enough about the people on the field; about their stories, what really makes them tick and how they came to make the choices they have. Perhaps if other sport-illiterate people like me knew more of the real stories behind these BRIGHT stars we’d take more of an interest in watching them play? Straight from the author’s mouth, the following are Bec’s answers to my incredibly hard-hitting, in depth questions…
Ava loves me because – I am the “keeper of the cheese sticks (Ava is OBSESSED with cheese sticks at the moment).”
My husband Brad loves me because – I make fabulous chicken enchiladas and a pretty mean lamb roast. I love him because he has great integrity, determination and compassion. Brad champions my career as though it were his own. Plus he’s a spunk.
I would describe my “signature style” as….well, I don’t know, really. I don’t spend much time thinking about fashion (which is blatantly obvious if you see me in person). Ideally I love classic items mixed in with a few quirky or unusual pieces. Sadly most days I am dressed in track pants and an old t-shirt at home. OK. So I am a self-confessed techno geek/nerd – whatever you want to call me. I LOVE the internet. I’m on Facebook and Twitter. I have a Ning and a Website and a Blog. And I really do HATE the phone, preferring email and text any day! But is the very same technology and speed at which we all have gotten so used to accessing information the very same thing that will one day see me in a straight-jacket, rocking away in the corner of a room, sucking my thumb, chanting “I’m in a safe place, I’m in a safe place”? That if you forget to turn your electric-blanket off, you can make human-toast…
That it’s really cold at the moment and still hard to get out of bed, no matter how long you delay it…
That my husband slept on MY side of the bed while I was in hospital recently (and used my electric blanket, even though he swears he doesn’t need one and has never turned his own side on!)…
That my husband didn’t make the bed once while I was in hospital…
That my husband is one of the hardest-working, most unselfish people I know…
That my cat is half the size she was before I went into hospital…
That asking for help nicely doesn’t always ensure a happy outcome if the young person you ask is not in a good place…
That if you purchase tickets to a Bon Jovi concert, you will eventually get to go to a Bon Jovi concert… Yesss!
